Utah Lake Water Release Prompts Jordan River Trail Closure Under 7800 S: Safety Precautions Urged Amid Surging Water Levels

Due to the ongoing release of water from Utah Lake into the Jordan River, the water levels have surged to unprecedented heights. As a safety precaution, the trail under 7800 South will be closed until further notice. This closure is imperative to safeguard trail users from potential hazards.

We strongly advise everyone to be extremely cautious when in proximity to the Jordan River, especially with the current heightened flow. It's crucial that individuals refrain from entering the water. Vital safety precautions include avoiding swift currents and remaining vigilant of your surroundings. Here are some additional safety tips for being near the Jordan River during periods of increased flow:

  • Keep a safe distance: Maintain a safe distance from the water's edge.
  • Supervise children and pets: Keep a close eye on children and pets at all times.
  • Avoid distractions: Stay focused on your surroundings and avoid distractions like headphones or excessive use of mobile devices.
  • Respect barriers and closures: Obey all posted signs, barriers, and closures, as they are there to protect your safety.

Salt Lake County is releasing water at a rate of 800 to 1,500 cubic feet per second (cfs) into the river system, with this release expected to continue through July. As a consequence of these elevated water levels, maintaining the open status of this trail section would pose significant risks to public safety.

We recognize the inconvenience this closure may cause and assure you that once the water levels subside, we will conduct a thorough cleanup and evaluate any necessary reconstruction efforts before reopening the trail.

In order to effectively communicate this closure, additional "Closed" signs will be installed alongside existing warning signage along the trail.

Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated. For updates and further developments regarding the trail closure, please refer to our city website and social media channels.

Stay safe and informed.
