Midvale City Council Recognizes the National Celebration of Black History Month

On February 6, 2024, the Midvale City Council recognized February as the national celebration of Black History Month. Join us in commemorating this national celebration as we reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and strive for a more just and inclusive future for all. Let's honor the often overlooked achievements of Black Americans and reaffirm our commitment to equality, justice, and dignity. 

City Council Proclmation

Whereas, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”; and

Whereas, the month of February is designated as Black History Month, providing an opportunity for all citizens to reflect on and commemorate the rich heritage, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans to our nation; and

Whereas, the theme for Black History Month 2024 focuses on African Americans and the Arts and is infused with African, Caribbean, and Black American lived experiences; and

Whereas, throughout history, Black Americans have played pivotal roles in shaping the cultural, social, economic, and political fabric of the United States, contributing to the advancement of our society in a myriad of fields such as science, arts, music, literature, sports, and civil rights; and

Whereas, it is imperative that we use this occasion to deepen our understanding of the challenges faced by the Black community, both historically and in the present day; and

Whereas, as a community, we must continue to work collectively to eradicate discrimination and prejudice, striving for a future where every individual, regardless of race, enjoys equal opportunities, justice, and dignity; and

Whereas, Midvale City recognizes February as a month to celebrate and honor the rich tapestry of Black history and reaffirm our collective dedication to a more just and inclusive society.

Now, Therefore, let it be resolved that Mayor Marcus Stevenson and the City Council of Midvale City, do hereby proclaim that from February 1 through February 29, 2024, Midvale City will recognize the national celebration of Black History Month.
