Midvale's Unified Officers of the Month
Midvale City and the Unified Police Department are honored to recognize Officer Kent Lundberg as the Officer of the Monthe for September 2017, and Chief Jason Mazuran for October 2017.
From mid-August through September 9, 2017 Midvale City and other surrounding jurisdictions, including Cottonwood Heights, West Jordan, Sandy and West Valley City experienced a rash of vandalisma wherin the offenders would throw rocks from a moving vehicle breaking car windows.
The vandals also targeted Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouses and broke several windows at church buildings. During the month-long crime spree, the amount of damage done was in the 10’s of thousands of dollars in Midvale City alone. These vandals were dubbed the “Rock Bandits” and several bulletins were published detailing what suspect information was available.
In the early morning hours of September 9, 2017 Officer Kent Lundberg was conducting proactive patrol in the area of 300 East Fort Union Boulevard when he observed a suspicious vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved. Officer Lundberg conducted a traffic stop on this vehicle and during his contact with the occupants observed several rocks, baseball bats, and sledge hammers in the car which were consistent with the vandalisms. Upon further investigation, Officer Lundberg obtained a confession from one of the occupants and subsequently located a Molotov cocktail in the glove box of the vehicle. Through his excellent proactive work and observations Officer Lundberg ended the vandalism spree and arrested those responsible.
During his tenure, Chief Jason Mazuran has demonstrated what it means to be a leader. Chief Mazuran came into the role as Chief with a vision of what the Midvale Precinct could be, and worked tirelessly to transform the precinct into the highest functioning precinct within the Unified Police Department. Chief Mazuran worked long hours, including many late nights, weekends and holidays, to ensure the city, the public and his subordinates knew he cared about them and not only valued them as partners, but as individuals. Chief Mazuran is a true example of what a Chief should be. "Maz" will be missed dearly as he moves onto his new assignment as Chief Deputy of the Protective Bureau.
